Nasogastric tubes are frequently used for administration of enteral nutrition. Before enteral nutrition is initiated, it is important to verify correct placement of the nasogastric tube because its placement in the respiratory pathways may have serious consequences for the patient. Foreign studies demonstrate that some of the used methods are not entirely safe for the patient. Radiography is regarded as the safest verification method of nasogastric tube placement. Safe methods include testing the pH of an aspirate from the stomach together with observation of its appearance as well as measuring the external part of the tube.
