Background: Urinary incontinence is a common symptom in pregnancy that can negatively affect a woman's quality of life.
Aim: to determine the prevalence and incidence of risk factors urinary incontinence in pregnancy.
Methods: The study group was consisted of women aged 18-45 years. Data were collected from 133 women in the third trimester of pregnancy using the Slovak validated version of the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire - Short Form. The research was conducted at the hospital in Myjava, Slovakia between December 2013 - January 2014.
Results: Of the total number of respondents (n = 133), 64.66% of the women enrolled in the study reported the presence of urinary incontinence during pregnancy. The most common type was stress urinary incontinence (73.26%). The incidence of urinary incontinence was higher in the group secundi and multipara, as well as in women with a history of vaginal delivery.
Conclusion: The study demonstrates the high prevalence of urinary incontinence in pregnant women. The incidence of urinary incontinence in pregnancy and parity may be potential risk factors for urinary incontinence in the future. Adequate attention needs to be paid to this issue. In clinical practice, pregnant women also need to be informed about prevention, risk factors, and treatment options depending on the type of urinary incontinence.
