Aims: The main aim of the study was to evaluate the incidence of the risk factors (RF) of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in the staff of large hospitals and to compare their occurerence with available information in the literature.

Methods: The research sample consists of 3124 employees in the average age of 36.18 years (median 34,0, SD 11,44), 562 men (M) (18,0 %) in the average age of 37,10 years (34,0; 12,26) and 2562 females (F) (82,0 %) in average age of 35,98 years (34,0; 11,24), those where examined in preventive check-ups. During check-ups the employees completed the questionnaire for the diagnosis of the main RF CVD and the nurses supplemented objective data information. The doctor assessed a protocol and recommended intervention of the risk. The results were statistically compared with those in the available literature by using Chi-square - pivot tables with Yates´s correction of five percent level of significance.

Results: Total of 857 employees smoke (27,4 %), 164 M (29,2 %) and 693 F (27,1 %). Most smokers are in the category of "other" (support medical staff) - 41.39 %, in the category of college student 14.76 % smoke. The incidence of smoking (RF) in men not differ from the Czech population (p = NS), women smoke significantly more (p
Conclussion: Given the high incidence of CVD risk factors the primary prevention should be based on the component of preventive check-ups.
