Epidemiology of tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is a disease subjected to notification duty. Data of all tuberculosis patients are monitored and evaluated in the registry of tuberculosis. The registry of tuberculosis is merged with the Information system for bacillary tuberculosis. The Information system for bacillary tuberculosis is based on mandatory laboratory notification of all positive mycobacterial examinations. In 2020, 368 new cases or recurrences of tuberculosis (TB) of all forms and locations were reported in the Czech Republic. Highly contagious infections (HCI) have common characteristics, namely a serious clinical course with relatively high mortality and high infectivity with a significant potential for rapid spread in the human population. Clinical units belonging to HCI can meet both characteristics at the same time or only one of them. Changes in the environment and in the way humankind behaves help the emergence and spread of HCI. Background: Tetanus is an important infectious disease that is characterized by high lethality. For many decades, an effective vaccine against this disease has been available, the use of which has achieved the elimination of this dangerous infection. Objective: To prove that at present tetanus is a disappearing infection, against which there is good immunity in all age groups, including the oldest individuals. Background: Vaccination against pertussis in the Czech Republic (CR) was started at the end of 1958. Vaccination was maintained at a very good level for a long time and only a few cases per year were reported. Nevertheless, in the CR, pertussis has been on the rise (re-emerging disease) since the 1990s, similarly to other countries.
