Aim: The aim of the research was to map the incidence of anxiety and depression in patients with ischemic heart disease and oncologic disease, to map and identify the extent of social support and find out the influence of social support on anxiety and depression in patients with chronic illness.
Methods: Quantitative research survey was used to meet these objectives. We used a standardized questionnaire of social support PSSS, Beck's BDI depression scale and anxiety scale (SAS). This research included the sample of 230 respondents who were treated or monitored for chronic diseases.
Results: The results of this research have clearly demonstrated the apparent protective effect of social support against the incidence of anxiety and depression in patients with chronic illness.
Conclusion: The research has confirmed a significant negative relation between the extent of social support and incidence of depression and anxiety in patients suffering from the above mentioned chronic conditions. Social support is a significant protective factor against depression and anxiety in chronic patients.
