The report presents the outcomes of the survey which dealed with nurses' motivation to the qualification's improvement. This survey was realized among 291 nurses working in the teaching hospital in Ostrava.
Aim: The aim of the article was to find out the motivation factors that influence the decision making process of the nurses to continue their education and that was done on the basis of the importance of these factors for them and satisfaction with the factors.
Methods: The theoretical resource for the research was Maslow's pyramid of needs and Herzberg's motivation theory. Pre-research was realised with the help of half-structured interwiev. The main survey was done by the questionnaire.
Results: During decision making process the most important factors for nurses were keeping the salary and the job. These factors were filed to confidence's and security's needs according to Maslow and to the hygienic factors according to Herzberg. Simultaneously nurses felt that keeping and improving of their mental abilities (the self fulfilment's needs according to Maslow and motivation factors according to Herzberg) were important too.
Conclusions: The results show that the nurses were influenced by the hygienic factors (confidence's and security's needs), which are external incentives. Simultaneously they were influenced by the motivation factors (the self fulfilment's needs), which are the "right" (internal) motivators. By these motivators individual is encouraged to activity although the effect of external incentives stopped.
